This is undeniably a challenging time for human confidence.
We are living through an era of rapid technological disruption, economical shifts, global volatility and uncertainty and this can fundamentally change how we view our identity, value, and future.
We must however never lose sight of how truly unique and special we are as human beings.
Our destiny belongs to us and there is so much that is within our control starting with our own self value and belief.

So how confident do you feel right now about your abilities, your intelligence, your creativity, and your unique place in this world?
Over the last twelve months I have been researching my latest “Being Human Series”.
This is a trilogy of mini books focusing on the quintessential skills we need, as human beings, to ensure that we remain confident, curious and connected in a world of rapid change and volatility.
During my research I spoke to numerous people about the current challenges that human beings are facing currently which can impact our confidence and even make us question our relevance.
So, can you relate to any of these challenges?
The rise of AI and automation
For centuries, we believed that our cognitive abilities were uniquely ours. With the rapid advancement of AI, machines can now perform many of these tasks in seconds. This can make us question our own skills and maybe even ask, “If a machine can do this faster and better than me, what is my actual value anymore?”
Comparing and even despairing
Social media constantly exposes us to carefully curated, highlight-reel versions of thousands of other people’s lives, every single day. It can be so easy to fall into the trap of comparing our reality with everyone else’s perfectly publicised success. This constant exposure can steadily erode our confidence and make us feel inadequate and depleted.
Uncertainty and relentless change
The modern job market and global landscape is shifting faster than ever and traditional paths to success are changing. Navigating a world with so many unpredictable economic conditions and rapid technological shifts can make us feel insecure about our future security and ability to adapt fast enough.
Catastrophising headlines
We are constantly flooded with news about global crises, political polarisation, and complex challenges like climate change and AI being on a mission to see us all out! When the scale of the world’s problems feels overwhelming, it can make us feel small, powerless, and doubtful that our personal actions or beliefs make any difference.
Why do we need to keep working on our human confidence?
Through all the turbulence and uncertainty, we may experience, we need to believe in ourselves and our abilities. This inner confidence is the fundamental driving force behind our personal growth, resilience, and achievement.
Without self-belief, we can often hesitate to take risks, pursue meaningful goals, or push through inevitable setbacks. Self-doubt can paralyse human potential. Believing in ourselves provides the mental and emotional strength we need to face challenges head-on, bounce back from setbacks, and ultimately turn our aspirations into reality.
So, what makes human beings so special?
Collective power
As humans we possess an unprecedented capacity for large-scale cooperation. We can unite millions of people across vast geographical distances through shared goals, complex economies, land international networks to achieve feats no single person could accomplish alone.
“I am because we are”
There is a wonderful African proverb that speaks volumes when it comes to the power of connectivity and the strength of togetherness.

Abstract thought and creativity
We are all creative beings, and our minds are uniquely capable of conceptualising abstract ideas, such as philosophy, mathematics, justice, and the future. This fuels endless creativity, which helps us to express complex emotions and build imagined realities through art, music, and literature.
Meta-cognition and adaptability
Humans possess meta-cognition and this is our ability to think about our own thinking. This self-awareness, combined with our emotional intelligence allows us to reflect on our mistakes, empathise with diverse perspectives, and adapt rapidly to changing environments.
Empathy
We have the power to empathise, and this is one of our most wonderful human traits. In an increasingly polarised world, empathy acts as a social solvent, dissolving the walls of division that can build up through lack of understanding. Empathy can de-escalate conflict, because when we appreciate another person’s viewpoint, it bridges the gap of hostility by recognising other people’s underlying humanity
Empathy can fuel innovation because the best designs, technologies, and policies do not come from a vacuum of abstract logic, they come from a deep understanding of human frustration, need, and desire. Empathy can also combat loneliness and, paradoxically, the quickest way to ease our own isolation is to focus our attention outward and offer a listening ear to someone else

In summary
This is of course not the definitive list and there are many traits that we have as human beings, and we must never lose sight of how unique and special we truly are. Whilst AI can do some impressive things, it doesn’t have a heart, and it doesn’t have a soul. So even with all the current scare mongering we must not lose sight of the incredible impact we can make by simply being human.
