Happy 2020

Happy new decade!

As we embark on a fresh new year and indeed a brand new decade, it is a time for making resolutions full of good intentions with hope for the future.
There are so many wonderful things that go on in the world and so many kind and inspiring people, however, these can at times become buried with negativity, complexity and chaos.

In order to maintain a healthy perspective and look after your mental health it is so important to actively seek out the silver linings in every situation.
To set the tone for my year I have put this poem up in my office as a creed for my decade. In my opinion, it is one of the most inspiring pieces of writing I have ever discovered.

It is a poem called Desiderata and was written in 1927 by Max Ehrmann, a poet and lawyer from Terre Haute, Indiana. The word Desiderata means “things that are desired”.

Embracing a new decade

Life can at times be quite challenging and Desiderata provides a concise and powerful reminder of how important it is to strive for what is important. The poem reminds us to treat each other kindly and to be gentle with ourselves. This, I personally believe is the perfect way to embrace life in the 2020’s.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

How to feel good10 ways to feel good right now!

When you are feeling low and need a boost here are ten ways to make you feel better!

1. List all your accomplishments

Sometimes you just need to remember all the positive things that you have achieved in your life so making a list to remind yourself will give you a confidence boost   

2. Do 10 minutes of exercise

Just a quick 10 minutes of exercise. Even if it is a quick run up and downstairs or standing up and stretching and walking about for a bit will give you an energy boost.

3. Find something to give away

If you have something you don’t need or use, and it might be something someone else might need or use, give it to them.

4. Lift someone else’s spirits

You can turn around bad feelings about yourself right away when you channel your energy into making someone feel good about themselves by doing or saying something nice.

5. Phone a friend

Who needs psychiatrist when you have friends? Friends can be walking, talking tonics and remind you that you are not alone!

6. Write down a goal

If you are feeling a bit low, think of something that would like to achieve and create a goal.

7. Relive your best memory

Focus on a wonderful, happy memory and take a few minutes to dwell on it. Go through all of the details and relive the experience in your mind and see how good it makes you feel.

8. Smile

Just the very act of smiling tells your brain that you are happy.

9. Let someone else decide

If you feel under pressure sometimes it is good to take the heat out of the situation and let someone else make the decision for you. You don’t always have to be in total control!

10 Turn off your computer and connect

Just connecting with another person will help you to feel less isolated and they may say something nice to you that will make you feel better.

A tribute to heroism

Today is the day we can wear our poppies with pride and remember all the men and women who sacrificed their lives and be truly grateful in the wake of their legacy.

Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is the Sunday nearest to 11 November which is Armistice Day. This overlaps with Remembrance Day and Veterans Day which is celebrated every year on 11 November to commemorate the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany.

This took on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918 and today at 11am we will be encouraged to take a two minute silence to show our respect and pay tribute.

So many lives were lost and there are so many stories of heroism, it seems only fitting that we take responsibility to honour the amazing legacy. We can contribute so much by just being aware of our own behaviours and to taking time to think about our own contribution and how we can make a positive difference every day of our lives.

This poem is a tribute to those who sacrificed so much and is a very simple creed for life.

 

A Souls Obituary

I am just in the process of packing and getting ready to go to Geneva tomorrow to do some work with the UN. It will be nice to see some snow on top of Mont Blanc and Geneva certainly is a pretty place especially in the winter. I must admit I love this time of year because there are so many nice things about it. It is of course the time also when we can fall into the trap, if we are not careful, of moaning about the weather and not getting enough fresh air and exercise because it’s cold outside!

Winter Blues

Two hundred years ago 75% of the population worked outdoors now only 10% of the population work in natural outdoor light. 12 Million people across Northern Europe are affected by SAD - Seasonal Affective Disorder. We are also more prone to comfort eat during the winter, consuming more sugary foods and refined carbohydrates! So making a conscious effort to really look after yourself in the winter will help you to feel healthier and happier.

 

Here are 10 ways to beat the bugs and blues

1. Manage your personal stress

Stress is often cited as a nasty precursor to deflating your immune system and leaving you more vulnerable to sneaky viruses. If you are feeling run down and over stretched it is time to slow down, sharpen your stress management skills and strengthen your immunity.

2. Exercise and energise

To keep your immune system healthy exercise is one of the best things that you can do. Wrap up warm and go for a lovely big walk. This is even better than going to the gym because you will get lots of fresh air and natural daylight.

3. Drink lots of water

Water may not be the drink of choice in the winter, however it is one of the best things that you can do to keep healthy and it is vital for all bodily functions. So keep a bottle with you at all times and keep sipping it throughout the day. There are some delicious herbal teas available and these will also add to your recommended quota of 2 litres a day.

4. Boost your vitamin C

Vitamin C is at the top of the list among natural immune boosters for your body. The research on the immune boosting properties of the vitamin has been extensive. So taking a supplement during the winter is a good idea and eat lots of seasonal fruit!

5. Eat yourself healthy

You can really protect your immune system by eating healthy food. Certain foods like garlic, ginger, tomatoes and onions are all great for warding off colds. Plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables will provide you with antioxidants and a whole host of vitamins and minerals. So let healthy food be your medicine.

6. Take Echinacea

Taking the herbal remedy Echinacea, according to research, can more than halve the risk of catching a common cold. It is made from nine species of herbaceous plants in the family Asteraceae which are commonly called purple coneflower. It is available in liquid, tablets and delicious herbal teas. Visit your local health shop to ask for more advice.

7. Reduce sugar

Eating or drinking 100 grams (8 tsp) of refined sugar, the equivalent of one 12-ounce can of sugary fizzy drink soda, can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by 40%. The immune-suppressing effect of refined sugar starts less than thirty minutes after ingestion and may last for five hours!

8. Drink alcohol in moderation

Despite the fact that it is the season to be jolly it doesn’t mean it has to be artificially induced! Excessive alcohol intake can harm the body's immune system in two ways. First, it produces an overall nutritional deficiency, depriving the body of valuable immune boosting nutrients.

9. Wash your hands

With more bugs abound it is important to wash your hands often and well especially before eating as this is one of the easiest ways to help prevent the spread of infections. Also, if you have a cold and you use a paper tissue throw them away after each use rather than keep using it as the germs will continue to transfer to your hands.

10. Sleep well

A good night’s rest is one of the best ways to boost your immune system. The quality of your sleep is very important too so that you feel energised at the start of each day. Cutting out caffeine and alcohol will help. Try a warm bath with lavender oil and a cup of camomile tea - it will work wonders.
